I've observed all of Messier's objects through our 8 inch Schmidt
Newtonian telescope from Meade. I'm a member of Riverside
Astronomical Society and am getting an early start on the National
History Day. I'm doing a research paper on the life of Charles
Messier and found the biographical information very helpful.

I believe I have seen them all! We have done the
Marathon about a dozen times, with my personal record at 106, and
the Astronomers of Humboldt record at 107, I think. We have
a fairly dark site at a rural mountaintop airport (no lights, and
rarely any planes), at about 2,800 ft in a dark part of the
country. Moisture is a problem, especially to the west in
the early evening. All-Nighters, like the marathon, are most
difficult around 12 am
or 1 am, and then a second wind seems to fill our sails, and take
us through until dawn. Coffee, snacks, and a bathroom are
important.

Great site, but could use some updating and higher placement on

would love to knock out a marathon.

It was my late husbands dream to take part in the Messier
Marathon. He was an officer in the Westchester Amateur
Astronomy Club. He died June 13, 2006 at the age of 52.
I want to do the marathon for him and fulfill his dream. I
have all his equipment, a 20 year old son to help and a smattering
of knowledge> What are my chances?
Response from Messiermarathon.com:
Terri,
Your chances are excellent
to have great outing that night. But please don't feel
disappointment if you find just a percentage of the items. You
said his dream was to take part in the Messier
Marathon, and taking part is the big part. Perhaps your goal
could be to get through the night to try
to get a peek at all the objects and in this way complete
the marathon. Who knows you may make it a yearly event!
Thanks for writing and I am sorry
for your loss. Family "is were it is at"
Good Luck!
Guy Mitchell

I had a four inch telescope for starters haere in Hawaii, now 11
years later purchased A new home and 10" Meade Litebridge
coupled with a 12mm Televue with 82 degree field of view and
BAM..... Im seeing all the Messier, NGC objects off my 24X24'
deck. And the added value is the Milky way is directly over my
area at the present time. Astronmy magazine gives me what to look
forward to each month with sky maps and thats helpful. The planets
are cool but Nebulas, Galaxy's, clusters both open and closed and
the ocassional passing satellites are a mind trip. I have seen
some things I cant explain but just nodded and chalked it up as OK
what the hell was that.
